Age isn’t a scary monster that creeps up behind us. You can look and feel fabulous at any decade and at 95 years old, Iris Apfel is living proof. Taking a look at the oldest Cover Girl to date, we know why the world swoons at her eccentricity. Her take on maximalism shifted the tides of normality entirely. She has become the light of a new Fashion era, and one of my favorite icons.
Iris Apfel is a Fashion icon and New York native with a background in Art history at NYU. Before she became a well-traveled collector of artisanal jewelery, Apfel began working at Women’s Wear Daily, then opened a textile firm with her late husband Carl Apfel, eventually taking her talent to interior designing.
Small in size with a loud Fashion sense, she brought her style game to the 2005 Metropolitan Museum of Art when her work (Rara Avis) was put on display. It was from this moment on that her face and name spread like wildfire. Netflix has even released a documentary called simply, “Iris.” The documentary lends a wonderful insight to who Iris is and how she came to be, also giving you a tour of her super funky house. For all of you Fashion aficionados, I recommend that you watch.
Her latest collaboration with Macy’s x INC International Concepts stays true to the style that we all know and love her for. Circle lenses worn on models and wild mixes of patterns and textures are her closet staples. INC International Concepts tailored their emojis to Iris when the release of their major collaboration made it’s debut down the runway. I was lucky enough to attend this magnificent event last NYFW and even score a (copy) pair of her famous glasses!
